When Neo is faced with the choice of taking the pill, two distinct reflections are depicted in Morpheus' glasses. Further, there are several instances of recurring visual motifs involving mirrors and reflections. Scenes occurring in the Matrix are tinted with green color grading, whereas scenes taking place in the real world are cast in a blue shade. While the pills are paramount, the film's specific use of color as well as repeated visual imagery are also significant ways in which key themes are developed. By consuming the blue pill, Neo would surrender control of his life, accepting a perpetual state of imbalance and incompatible duality. In The Matrix, the blue pill is important as it represents irrevocable resignation. Based on Morpheus' claim, it can also be inferred that taking the blue pill is absolute. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe." This revelation implies that taking the blue pill essentially resets all traces of knowledge related to the Matrix. I recommend the bitter red pill that will cure you, rather than the sweet blue one that makes the pain go away but also feeds the disease.Although less is revealed about the blue pill, Morpheus states, " You take the blue pill, the story ends. You will then see what life on Earth really depends upon, what really makes you happy, what your role and your responsibilities are, and that real change can only originate from inside yourself. So you will stop blaming politicians, companies, others, your situation, or whatever you did to redirect your guilt. You will come to realize that you are the cause: of a traffic jam when you are sitting in it, of the side effects when you buy something. You will recognize that technology cannot save us from our growing wants, growth will always outstrip any gains made as it has always done: that is exactly how the system works. That these are not just glitches in the consumer matrix with a promise of a quick fix, but this is the heart of the system. You will finally see that eventually the inconveniences you have tried so hard to ignore, are catching up with us everywhere. You will stop swallowing simple ‘facts’ and ‘fixes’ and you will see the hopium for what it is: a steady feed of blue pills. The whole picture of this dream actually resembles a nightmare: You will suddenly see the effects that your relentless pursuits, and lifestyle, have had on family, friendships and the natural environment. You will realize that you have been fed a steady stream of illusions of smiley, happy consumers through social media and corporate ads. Time to fly… you take the red pill - and you will rudely awaken. The environment remains someone else’s problem, as we can always go virtual, where the grass is greener, heck… we are already half way into this Meta Verse. But best of all, there are no limits to growth and thus you do not need to change your lifestyle, except for growth!. And you help to avoid a global economic collapse. You feel that by buying their stuff, you can be happy too. You assume that they have your best interests at heart, or if not that then at least that they will make sure that all your desires are satisfied. Between the chatter of your friends, about how great their life is, ideal companies present you with all the fixes that you need and that will make you happy. You digest your daily feed of social media, two blue variants to choose from: Ln, Fb. You will feel like a happy consumer, the worries and bad dreams will go away. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. (includes some of the findings from my research on consumerism)Ĭhoose what kind of life you want: Blue Pill or Red Pill? This is your last chance. And because The Matrix: Resurrections is in the cinemas, let’s borrow its theme. Let’s have some fun, not with polls, but pills this time.
